Poortgebouw van De Meelfabriek in Leiden

POORTGEBOUW

Once earmarked for demolition, the charm of the Poortgebouw is now considered one of De Meelfabriek’s great assets, and the building has since been designated a national heritage monument. Dating from 1940, it was designed by architect B. Buurman in a style influenced by Functionalist Expressionism, much like the Directiekantoor opposite.

The Poortgebouw originally served as a bicycle shed and garage for the directors’ cars. It has since been restored and adapted for reuse. For several years, the Poortgebouw functioned as a pop-up location for a variety of creative businesses. Some of these have since established themselves permanently at De Meelfabriek, including Bizon Events and OWN Agency. In the rear section of the building, transformers required for the redevelopment and storage facilities for residents of the Meelpakhuis were constructed in 2024. The front section is currently occupied by the site management team and construction staff.

Year of construction: 1940 / Transformation completed: 2026
Architect: B. Buurman / Transformation architect: Studio Akkerhuis Architects
