Around the historical Leiden lies a six-kilometer-long moat which was built in 1659. On the old ramparts and bastions fascinating structures such as the Botanical Gardens and Observatory can be found. But also museums, beautiful cemeteries, city mills and impressive industrial monuments. The Leiden canals are one of the largest city defenses of Europe whose structure is still intact.
The foundation Friends of the Singel Park, the city of Leiden and many inhabitants and organizations in the city are working together, using this unique heritage to create a large compact park: the Singel Park. A place for sports and culture to experience, to discover nature and history, to find peace and to meet people. With the water of the canals running like warm blue veins through the park. And with the Hortus Botanicus as a curator for a wide variety of trees and plants from all over the world.
